motivation

Ugh, I’m really struggling with motivation now, even though the end of my credit card debt is near. I’ve been doing some shopping the last couple of weekends, and even though I can justify my purchases - textbooks for studying, and birthday presents for my boyfriend’s daughter - I’m still feeling the urge to shop, and to not save as much (or at least, putting it onto my Amex card to clear off the debt!) There are some clothes that I really like (and I don’t often buy clothes, I’m actually pretty restrained in that department, most of the time!), and some books from Amazon I’d love to read. So even though the end is in sight (if I focus, I can have the rest of my Amex card paid off before the end of the month!), I’m still struggling to stay on track, and keep progressing the same way I have been this year so far.
Any tips/suggestions on how to avoid temptation, and to keep saving hard to pay off the last $800 of my credit card?

I totally understand what you’re talking about regarding the lack of motivation. I’d suggest you write down a goal - pay off $800 in 2 months, etc. and always pay the cc first when you get your paychecks. Also, think about what you can get with your money once you’ve paid off the cc - a reward is in order and without the cc payment you will have some money left over to treat yourself…with cash! ;) … on something that you like.

Hey, I like the look! My best way to avoid temptation (even when I don’t really want to, I just have to) is to try and bury myself in work and cleaning. I also try to think of ways to EARN money, not spend money, because that’s so easy to do when your attention wanders. Discipline can be so easy to break sometimes!

Stargirl,
Stay motivated the clothes and the books will be there when the debt is gone. Then just make sure that you pay cash for everything and don’t charge again. As a matter of fact consider yourself a bill collector and put money away just in case there is an emergency. Budget for fun though once you’ve paid off you Amex in full. Am I making sense. I don’t know. I digress :O).

Stay Motivated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just do it, you’ve made it this far! As a suggestion moving forward (assuming you don’t already do this), but a “Blow” catergory in your budget and begin to plan your impluses (so to speak). Give yourself a little wiggle room each month to a have a “little” fun in the moment. But, once you’ve spent all of you “blow money”, you’re done until next month.
A little grease on the wheels helps keep things moving. If you are too tight, you will end up blowing your budget because you didn’t leave your self any room to blow off some steam!

Hi Stargirl,
I just came across your blog and really like it!
When I was paying off my credit cards, I focused on how much interest those stupid credit card companies were making off of me, and it got me really angry! Why should I be giving them my hard-earned money!? So I made it my goal to get rid of my crecit card debt ASAP, and if I achieved the goal I set out for myself (X amount in X amount of time), then I would reward myself with something small like a cute shirt, or a book, or a nice dinner out, that I could pay for in cash.
Anyway, stay motivated and I know you’ll do great! Having a PF blog really helps create moral support too! :) I’m linking to you so I can keep up wtih your progress.
